We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our research group at the University of Brescia and contribute to the development of innovative mechanistic models describing the population dynamics of invasive species and agricultural pests. The position is full-time and immediately available within an already funded and active research programme, offering the opportunity to contribute from the outset to ongoing national and Horizon Europe projects.
The successful candidate will develop mechanistic and computational models, estimate biological parameters and functional relationships from experimental and field data, design inference and uncertainty quantification methods, and implement reproducible computational workflows. The research will support the development of decision-support tools for plant health, agricultural sustainability, and environmental risk assessment.
The position involves close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of ecologists, entomologists, statisticians, plant pathologists, and computer scientists, as well as extensive interaction with Italian and international universities, research institutes, and public organizations through collaborative research projects and scientific networks.
Applicants should have a strong background in mathematical or computational modelling, quantitative ecology, statistics, applied mathematics, computer science, or related disciplines. Experience in mechanistic modelling, parameter estimation, uncertainty analysis, and scientific programming (Python, R, MATLAB, C++, or similar) is highly desirable.
Biological invasions and emerging agricultural pests are among the greatest threats to food security, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience. Understanding and predicting the population dynamics of invasive species is essential for developing sustainable management strategies and supporting evidence-based decision making. As the number and impact of invasive alien species continue to increase worldwide, this research area has become a major scientific priority, attracting substantial funding through national and European research programmes.
We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our research group at the University of Brescia and contribute to the development of innovative mechanistic models describing the population dynamics of invasive species and agricultural pests. The position is full-time and immediately available within an already funded and active research programme, providing the opportunity to contribute from the outset to ongoing national and Horizon Europe projects. Given the strong and growing investment in this research area, successful candidates will have excellent opportunities to contribute to future funded projects and to pursue long-term research careers within the group.
The research group is coordinated by Professor Gianni Gilioli, an internationally recognized expert in ecological modelling, invasive species, and quantitative risk assessment. Professor Gilioli has authored more than 400 scientific publications and served as an EFSA Plant Health expert for more than ten years, contributing to numerous European scientific panels and risk assessment activities. The group has extensive expertise in ecological modelling, population dynamics, plant health, and quantitative methods, and currently coordinates the modelling work packages of two Horizon Europe projects, collaborating with leading universities, research institutes, governmental organizations, and European agencies.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development and application of physiologically-based demographic model (PBDMs), together with other modelling approaches, to investigate the dynamics of invasive species and agricultural pests under different environmental and management scenarios. Activities will include developing computational models, estimating biological parameters and functional relationships from laboratory and field data, designing inference and uncertainty quantification methods, and implementing reproducible computational workflows. The research will support the development of decision-support systems for plant health, agricultural sustainability, and environmental risk assessment.
The position involves close collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of ecologists, entomologists, statisticians, plant pathologists, mathematicians, and computer scientists, as well as extensive interaction with Italian and international partners through collaborative research projects. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop scientific independence while actively contributing to multidisciplinary research, publishing in leading international journals, presenting results at international conferences, and participating in the preparation of competitive research proposals.
Applicants should have a strong background in mathematical or computational modelling, quantitative ecology, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, physics, or related disciplines. Experience with ecological or biological modelling, parameter estimation, uncertainty analysis, and scientific programming (Python, R, MATLAB, C++, or similar) is highly desirable.
