Job Summary
A postdoctoral position is available in the McDonnell lab at the University of Utah's Moran Eye Center. The McDonnell lab is launching a program to investigate the distal region of the conventional outflow pathway to better understand the physiological and pathological implications of this pathway, specifically with regards to intraocular pressure regulation and the development of primary open-angle glaucoma. We are recruiting a postdoctoral fellow to apply perfusion technologies in conjunction with cell culture, molecular biology and imaging modalities to investigate the cells and vessels of this pathway.
The McDonnell lab culture is open and emphasizes collaborative science with high rigor and translational applications: you will join a small lab group with a large collaborative network of vision scientists aimed at finding better treatments for glaucoma.
Responsibilities
Our long term goal is to map the distal outflow pathway anatomically and functionally to assess its physiological functions in intraocular pressure regulation. This work is at the intersection of cell biology, aqueous fluid dynamics, physiology, and biomedical engineering.
Methodologies in the lab:
cell culture (primary human and immortalized cells from the conventional outflow pathway)
molecular biology techniques (Western blotting, PCR, proteomics)
ocular perfusion techniques (iPerfusion 3)
imaging (confocal, electron microscopy, microCT, histology)
Experience in all of these areas is not required, however, a background in ocular perfusion is necessary for this position.
We offer:
A highly collaborative, supportive environment spanning wet-lab, computational, and translational efforts, embedded in the Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah.
Structured mentoring to help you define your scientific niche, build an independent research vision, and prepare competitive grant and faculty applications.
Access to state-of-the-art core facilities and an extensive network of national and international collaborators in vision science.
Minimum Qualifications
Preferences
Ideal candidates will have a PhD or MD/PhD in a relevant field (e.g. bioengineering, molecular biology, physiology, cell biology).
A background in ocular perfusion techniques and an enthusiasm to learn across other disciplines in order to complete the projects overall goals.
The ability to work independently and as part of a larger team along with strong organizational skills
