Duties/Responsibilities:

Lead or co-lead software engineering efforts for generative AI–enabled educational tools, including prototyping, model integration, system testing, and iterative refinement

Establish and maintain scholarly research and publication

Support the Director in technical aspects of Center operations related to AI, computer science, and software engineering

Mentor graduate students working on AI development, data science, and software engineering in education

Position Summary:

The AI4STEM Education Center at the University of Georgia’s (UGA) Mary Frances Early College of Education invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position with a focus on the development of AI systems and data science for STEM education to begin February 2026. The position is a 12-month renewable full-time appointment based on the Athens campus.

The successful candidate will be working with Dr. Xiaoming Zhai, Associate Professor and Director of the AI4STEM Education Center, and other collaborators on several federally funded grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. The candidate will actively contribute to the design, development, and evaluation of AI applications to advance computing, AI literacy, data science, and STEM education across K–12 and higher education.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

A doctorate in computer science, data science, education with a computing focus, or a closely related field by the start date

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies :

Demonstrated expertise developing, implementing, and evaluating software systems that use machine learning, natural language processing, generative AI, and/or computer vision

Proficiency in modern software engineering tools, workflows, and languages (e.g., Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow)

High-quality publications on AI for STEM education or AI-enabled learning technologies

Ability to work on campus and engage collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams

Strong commitment to developing AI systems and data science skills to improve STEM education.

Ability to translate complex AI tools and concepts into accessible learning experiences for teachers and students

An established, active record of scholarship and productivity

Strong communication, organization, responsiveness, and collaborative teamwork skills
