The Omega Group in the Physics Department has an opening for two postdocs to join in the study of Electroweak and Higgs physics on ATLAS and for future collider experiments. The successful candidates will also contribute to the development of trigger technologies intended for use at the HL-LHC and by future experiments. Applicants should have a strong interest in and experience with the LHC scientific program This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

The Omega Group in the Physics Department at BNL focuses on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. The Omega Group has major responsibilities in the operation of the Liquid Argon calorimeter, Trigger & Data Acquisition, and software development, and has leading roles in the ATLAS High Luminosity Large-Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) upgrade (Silicon Strip detector, Liquid Argon calorimeter, and Trigger & Data Acquisition). The group also has strong detector R&D programs on silicon detectors and in trigger/data acquisition. BNL serves as the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the U.S. ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade Project, the ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is an active U.S. ATLAS Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Participation in the ATLAS scientific program with a strong focus on Electroweak and Higgs physics.

Participation in detector research and development, especially for low-latency event selection in trigger systems.

Development of new artificial-intelligence and machine-learning techniques for high-energy physics

Participation in developing, constructing, installing, integrating, and commissioning hardware, firmware, and software for the HL-LHC Upgrade of the ATLAS detector.

Participation in the operation, software, and computing of the ATLAS experiment.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ph.D. in experimental particle or nuclear physics or related field.

Experience with data analysis and knowledge of statistical techniques for data analysis

Experience in detector performance or trigger systems for high energy or nuclear physics experiments

Experience with machine learning techniques and tools

Ability to work in a large international collaboration

Hands-on problem-solving skills and clear and concise verbal and written communication skills

Demonstrated track record of publication of research in high quality peer-reviewed journals and delivery of presentations

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Physics analysis with LHC data

Expertise in machine learning techniques and tools

Experience with detector R&D and/or construction

Experience with computing and software development for high energy or nuclear physics experiments

OTHER INFORMATION:

Domestic and international travel should be expected
