The integrity of the mitochondrial network is maintained by the selective removal of damaged mitochondria through mitophagy [1]. This process is essential for proper mitochondrial function, and dysfunction in mitophagy can lead to the development of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s [1].

However, mitophagy can also trigger cell death in cancer cells, for example, via ferroptosis [2]. Our lab aims to leverage this mitophagy-related mechanism to induce cell death in liver cancer cells. To achieve this, we are developing small molecule drugs that enhance mitophagy. We have already demonstrated that a prototypic compound effectively kills liver cancer cells, and we are now seeking a creative and goal-oriented PhD student to decipher its mechanism of action.

We offer full scholarships to suitable PhD candidates. While experience in tissue culture and microscopy is beneficial, it is not required. However, experience in molecular biology techniques (cloning and PCR) is essential.
