Job description:Postdoc for "Large-Eddy Simulations of Arctic air-mass transformations" (m/f/d)
Background
The Arctic climate is shaped by the advection, cooling, and drying of air masses from lower latitudes. To better constrain future Arctic climate change, we want to understand how boundary-layer and cloud processes drive and control these air-mass transformations.
Within the ERC-funded junior research group “Understanding Arctic amplification of climate change through air-mass transformations,” we are looking for a postdoc to study boundary-layer and cloud processes in the air-mass transformations that follow moist intrusion events into the Arctic. Using large-eddy simulation models, you will set up and run case studies of observed air-mass transformations. Collaborating with other group members, you will evaluate the model simulations against satellite remote sensing and balloon-borne observations and study their sensitivity to a changing climate.
Your Tasks
Analyze the exchange and transformation of air masses between the Arctic and lower latitudes in reanalysis datasets and climate model output.
In collaboration with other team members, link the results from the model analysis to air-mass-following observations and process model studies carried out within the project.
Your Profile
A high degree of scientific curiosity and willingness to explore new methods and ideas
PhD in Physics, meteorology or a related subject
Experience with running and evaluating models
English skills that allow one to communicate in an international working environment, and to read and write scientific publications in English (approximately equivalent to CEFR level C1).
Preferred Qualifications and Skills
Prior experience with setting up and running Large-Eddy simulations
Knowledge of cloud physics and/or boundary-layer processes/ atmospheric turbulence.
We are open to excellent and highly motivated applicants without specific experience in atmospheric or meteorological modeling, but with a strong background in physics and good programming skills.
