The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a position as Postdoctoral Fellow in Materials Physics at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mathematic and Physics. The position is vacant from May 1st, 2022.
The objective of the position is to strengthen research, and to give researchers/scholars holding a doctoral degree the opportunity for further qualification toward top academic positions.
Postdoctoral Fellow is employed for a period of two years.
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be affiliated with the following project “Phonon lifetimes; unifying inelastic neutron scattering measurements with first principle calculations”. In this project, scientists at the University of Stavanger, SINTEF, Technical University of Denmark, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and collaborators will work together to develop new experimental and computational methodologies based on high-resolution neutron techniques to gain accurate insights into thermal conductivity.
In collaboration with the project team, the postdoctoral fellow is expected to contribute to the analysis, calculation, and digitalization of the resolution function of the neutron spectrometer “Bifrost” at the European Spallation Source, Scandinavia’s largest research facility.
The position is funded by The Research Council of Norway.
The qualifying project will be carried out mainly at the University of Stavanger, with stays at the Technical University of Denmark and the European Spallation Source. It is assumed that the appointee will work full time on the project and that she/he will participate in group discussions in order to fulfil the relevant project milestones.
Research statement
You should submit a research statement describing your research interests, academic history, and future directions. In addition, the research statement, in connection with your research background, must show how you will proceed to carry out the research work, what the key issues and hypotheses will be, what theories and methods you will apply, publication channels and a schedule for carrying out the work. It must be clear from the application in what way the project will be beneficial for your competence development. The research statement will be included in the competence assessment.
The final project description and progress plan are drawn up in consultation with the supervisor (s) during the first three months of the employment period. It is a prerequisite that you complete the project during the employment period.
Qualification requirements
You must have a ph.d. in Physics. The ph.d. thesis must have been submitted for evaluation within the application deadline for the position and approved before accession.
You must have good command of both oral and written English.
In the assessment the following criteria will be emphasised:
relevance and quality of the research statement
high degree of confidence in a programing language (eg. Python)
previous experience with neutron scattering methods is advantageous, as well as experience in neutron ray-tracing simulations and neutron resolution calculations
submitted scientific work and your personal skills for completing the project within the timeframe
international experience
good teamwork, communication skills and ability to participate in research communities across organisational units
ability to work independently in a structured manner
motivation, sense of responsibility and accountability, work capacity and enthusiasm for research

Department of Mathematics and Physics is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The department offers study programs at all levels within the areas Mathematics, Statistics and Physics. The department is responsible for all basic tuition in mathematics, physics and statistics at the faculty. There are currently 50 employees including doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, and 100 students at the department.
