The CRUK Beatson Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe’s leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability and integrity.

The diversity of our staff and students is what makes the CRUK Beatson Institute a great place to work and advance discoveries in cancer research. Family friendly policies, our collaborative ethos, a focus on good mental health and well-being and opportunities for all, help to create an enjoyable and inclusive workplace where your voice matters

We are looking for a postdoctoral research scientist to join us in the Cowling lab to investigate RNA cap regulation. We are discovering how RNA cap formation is regulated in embryonic stem cells, during differentiation and de-differentiation, and in mature neurons. We aim to understand the impact that RNA capping enzyme regulation has on gene expression, cell function and cell fate decisions.

You will join the Cowling lab team to investigate aspects of current research questions around the function of the RNA capping enzymes in embryonic stem cells and neurons, as well as have the opportunity to initiate novel research directions. We use the latest technologies to address our research questions including advanced mass spectrometry, biochemistry, molecular biology, imaging, sequencing/bioinformatics and tissue culture technologies. The postdoc will also collaborate with the other Beatson Institute labs which investigate RNA cap function and gene regulation.

The successful applicant will require a PhD in gene regulation and/or cell fate decisions. Applications are welcomed from current PhD students, close to completing their degree. Previous experience in some of the areas mentioned above is advantageous but training in new areas of research is supported and encouraged.

For informal enquiries please email v.cowling@beatson.gla.ac.uk

The Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute is committed to increase the number of female scientists at this level and encourages female applicants to apply. We have recently introduced a highly attractive maternity policy which provides 12-18 months support and funding for postdocs wishing to take time off to spend with their children.

All applications must be made via our website at https://www.beatson.gla.ac.uk/Careers/Postdoctoral-Fellows/

Closing Date for Applications: 27th March 2022
