Job Description
Highly motivated and creative postdoctoral fellow needed to join our team at the Calgary Prion Research Unit.
Prions are proteinaceous infectious particles causing infectious and fatal neurodegenerative diseases in humans and animals. We offer a position for a 5 year project funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research which aims at gaining mechanistic understanding of effects of prion accumulation on vesicle trafficking and cargo recycling in the endocytic pathway. The long term goal of this research is to identify new targets for the treatment and to improve current understanding of contributors to neurodegeneration in prion disease. We work with prion infected neuronal cell lines, primary neurons, organotypic slice cultures and mouse models of prion disease.
The successful applicant is expected to take on a leading role in study design, establish models such as organotypic slice cultures, co-supervise graduate and undergraduate students as well as draft manuscripts and assist in writing grant proposals.
The candidate has the opportunity and is expected to apply for postdoctoral fellowships depending on eligibility. We offer a vibrant research environment and strong ties to national and international collaborators as well as the opportunity to attend relevant conferences to present results. The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has a very active postdoctoral fellow community, and our membership with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute provides excellent opportunities for career development (see https://hbi.ucalgary.ca/education/realise).
Qualifications:
- PhD in neuroscience, cell biology, biochemistry or related field within up to 2.5 years after completion
- strong knowledge in cell biology and confocal microscopy, demonstrated by publications
- excellent English language and time management skills
- able to work independently and as part of a team
- experience in preparation and handling of primary neuron cultures is an asset
