  Postdoctoral Fellowship or Research Assistant Professor, Cardiac Electrophysiology

  Applications are invited from interested candidates for a postdoctoral fellowship or research assistant professor position in a well-known cardiac electrophysiology laboratory at Northwestern University – Feinberg School of Medicine. Our laboratory studies the mechanisms of heart rhythm disorders and uses large animal models to develop new gene therapy based approaches to treat atrial fibrillation (the most common heart rhythm disorder).

  Essential qualifications:

  The candidate should have a PhD in a basic science discipline or should have an MD with adequate research experience. While a candidate with a background in cellular and/or whole animal cardiac electrophysiology will be preferred, candidates with strong molecular biology skills who have experience in other aspects of cardiovascular physiology (e.g. excitation-contraction coupling, heart failure) and have an interest in learning cardiac electrophysiology will also be considered.

  The candidate should be well versed in one or more of the following disciplines:

  A. Electrophysiology. The candidate should be well versed in at least one of the following electrophysiological techniques:

  -Single cell electrophysiology (patch clamp) techniques

  -High resolution optical mapping (in Langendorff perfused intact hearts)

  -Electrophysiological mapping in the intact heart in-vivo

  B. Molecular genetics, cell culture, biochemistry. Experience with omics approaches to explore the transcriptome, epigenome and genome of the heart would be considered a major strength. The candidate also should have experience in basic molecular biology techniques, cell culture, biochemistry and histology. Experience with knockout mouse models, human iPSC- derived cardiomyocytes and gene editing (and/or gene therapy) will be considered a plus.

  Additional (optional) qualifications:

  1) Digital signal processing of biological signals with experience in programming in Matlab or related computer languages (e.g. IDL, Labview) is a plus.

  Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Acquisition and interpretation of single cell voltage/current clamp recordings from isolated cardiomyocytes and/or acquisition and interpretation of electrophysiological signals acquired during high resolution optical mapping

  and/or performing high-density cardiac electrophysiology mapping (in-vivo) in large animals.

  2. Assessment of the transcriptomic, epigenomic and/or genomic signature of atria from animals and/or patients with atrial fibrillation.

  3. Performance of gene therapy experiments in large animal models of atrial fibrillation.

  4. Data analysis and manuscript preparation.
