Research Associate/Postdoctoral Researcher - Smart Sensors Lab, College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (NUIG RES 138-22)

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed-term position as a Research Associate/Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team at the Smart Sensors Lab, College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded by the Disruptive Technology Innovation Fund (DTIF) to develop implantable sensors and is available from July20th, 2022 to April 30th, 2023.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will work as part of the team developing medical  technology for the cardiovascular application. The core technical work includes research and development of medical device prototypes.

The position will require an individual with expertise in understanding disease states that can be translated into user needs, testing and development of prototypes, and product evaluation and validation. The Research Associate/Postdoctoral Researcher will work closely with academic, industry and clinical partners to design, develop and evaluate the efficacy of the proposed medical device.

Duties:

The successful candidate shall be expected to carry out the following duties as part of his/her role:

Development of the device prototypes for pre-clinical testing.

Understand the disease state and translation of user needs into design outputs

Support product development R&D activities across the platform/technologies

Support product evaluation and validation, including the development of test methods to demonstrate device performance to meet technical specifications established through the design development process. Support execution of test method validations

Support generation and testing of prototypes; analyse test data and interpret to identify the optimal solution(s)

Literature and IP search as required by the project

Computer modelling and bench testing of sensor delivery system.

Interface with clinical, commercial and technical experts, to gain necessary  input to the design of the device.

Work with other team members to plan project activities and set key milestones.

Prepare scientific reports and research articles.

Qualifications/Skills required:

Essential Requirements:

Honours degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Biomedical Engineering (or related disciplines)

4+ years’ experience in medical device modelling and prototyping

Track record of publishing in high-impact engineering and/or biomedical journals.

Evidence of experience in biosystem modelling

Strong design and technical ability based on a broad and deep knowledge of fundamental engineering principles

Working knowledge of problem-solving techniques and methodologies with broad biomedical materials and processing knowledge

Highly motivated and passionate about new scientific discoveries.

A good team player who works well in a small team environment

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

Desirable Requirements:

A PhD in Electrical/Mechanical/Biomedical Engineering (or related discipline)

Experience in CAD design and modelling

Knowledge of medical implantable devices and delivery systems

Experience in the design and modelling of medical implants and/or delivery systems.

Experience in prototype development and test methods

Salary:

€39,522 – €45,611 per annum pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply).

Start date: Position is available from July 20th, 2022
