Postdoctoral Training Fellow - Protein Degradation Drug Discovery

Salary: Dependent on relevant Postdoctoral experience. Future progression is based on annual performance review. If the candidate has not yet been awarded their PhD, the starting salary will be at £32,844 until the successful completion of their viva.

Duration of Contract: Fixed Term for 2 years

Hours per week: 35 hours per week (Full Time)

Closing Date: 30th June 2022.

Research Lead: Dr Rosemary Burke

Summary of Role

The main objective of this post is to develop and exploit biochemical, biophysical and cell-based assays to identify and characterise novel compounds as protein degradation tools for target validation and drug discovery projects.

We are seeking a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Training Fellow keen to apply biochemical and cellular assay expertise as part of a research programme within the ICR’s Cancer Therapeutics Unit (CTU) focused on targeted protein degradation. Hijacking the natural cellular degradation pathways to induce cancer cells to break down and remove cancer-causing proteins has the potential to revolutionise cancer treatments and target previously undruggable proteins. The successful candidate will be embedded in the Hit Discovery and Structural Design Team of the CTU and will work with multidisciplinary teams across the ICR on specific projects seeking to exploit protein degradation mechanisms.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate must have a PhD in a bioscience discipline with good all-round practical skills in biochemical and cellular techniques related to monitoring small molecule binding and function. Knowledge and experience working in the protein degradation field would be an advantage.

The ICR has a workforce agreement stating that Postdoctoral Training Fellows can only be employed for up to 7 years as PDTF at the ICR, providing total postdoctoral experience (including previous employment at this level elsewhere) does not exceed 10 years

Department/Directorate Information:

The Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit (CTU), within the Division of Cancer Therapeutics, is a multidisciplinary ‘bench to bedside’ centre, comprising around 160 staff dedicated to the discovery and development of novel therapeutics for the treatment of cancer. The CTU’s exciting goal is to discover high quality small molecule drug candidates and to progress these to clinical trial. All the scientific disciplines are in place to make this possible, including medicinal chemistry, biology, structural biology, assay scientists, drug metabolism and clinical specialists and the CTU has established an active research programme in the protein degradation field.
