Postdoctoral Scientist

University of Alabama at Birmingham

CANCER METABOLISM & CELL FATE RESEARCH

Postdoctoral Scientist

Department of Radiation Oncology and O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center,

University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)

The Radiation Oncology Cancer Metabolism and Cell Fate Laboratory at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is recruiting an exceptional and highly motivated Postdoctoral Scientist to expand efforts in basic and translational cancer cell metabolism and cell fate research in the NIH K08-funded laboratory of Dr. Neil Pfister, MD, PhD. In addition to an exciting work environment, we offer a competitive salary and a strong benefits package. UAB is consistently rated among the top Universities according to US News and World Reports. UAB is the No. 1 University in The Scientist’s “Best Places to Work for Postdocs”, with particular strengths in career development opportunities, training, and mentoring. UAB has been named America’s No. 1 Best Large Employer by Forbes, topping the list of more than 500 public and private corporations, hospitals, universities, Fortune 500 companies and more, across dozens of industries.

The position is intended for outstanding candidates with proven research productivity to expand on our NIH-funded project focused on how the electron transport chain regulates cell fate. Projects include investigating novel bioactive protein fragments and determining the molecular steps leading to activation of mitochondrial permeability transition. Candidates should have extensive molecular biology experience. Expertise in cell culture, molecular biology, immunofluorescence microscopy, DNA damage, and/or mitochondrial biology is sought but not required. Specialty techniques we utilize include CRISPR screens, DNA-RNA immunoprecipitation (DRIP), Oroboros O2k high resolution respirometry, 2D gel electrophoresis, Native PAGE, and implementation of novel Digital PCR (dPCR) protocols including gene expression, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and DNA damage assays. Candidates are expected to hold a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree related to cancer biology/molecular biology. Candidates should have a strong desire to work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.

UAB has one of the most extensive tumor research programs in the US. The O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of cancer research and is one of the original NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers. The Cancer Metabolism and Cell Fate Laboratory is located in the new Hazelrig-Salter Radiation Oncology Center and is dedicated to bring molecular advances in the pathogenesis and therapy of human tumors to clinical application.

Interested candidates should submit via e-mail an electronic copy of their curriculum vitae, a cover letter describing their past research experience, along with complete contact information for three references to: Neil Pfister, MD PhD, Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology and Associate Scientist for the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, at: ntpfister@uabmc.edu. Specify “Postdoctoral Fellow Position” in your email subject header.

UAB is an equal opportunity employer, all qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.
