The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. We provided the first convincing evidence that DNA damage is the basic cause of cancer, laying the foundation for the now universally accepted idea that cancer is a genetic disease. Today, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) leads the world at isolating cancer-related genes and discovering new targeted drugs for personalised cancer treatment.

Under the leadership of our Chief Executive, Professor Paul Workman FRS, the ICR is ranked as the UK’s leading academic research centre. Together with our partner The Royal Marsden, we are rated in the top five cancer centres globally.

The ICR is committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best minds in the world to join us in our mission – to make the discoveries that defeat cancer.

The focus of the Molecular and Population Genetics Team is the identification and characterisation of genetic variation influencing the development of renal cancer. Our recently funded research programme combines high throughput methods (Hi-C and its derivatives, cell specific RNA sequencing and ChIP-profiling, MPRA) with in depth functional characterisation of variants and target genes. The successful applicant will be responsible for setting up reporter based high-throughput methodologies for the characterisation of credible driver mutations from large scale whole genome sequencing of renal cancers.

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Training Fellow to contribute to our MRC funded programme of work, combining high throughput methods with in depth functional characterisation of individual mutations. The appointee will be responsible for setting up reporter-gene based high-throughput methodologies in order to characterise credible functional variants from analyses of large-scale sequencing. Combining these data with sequencing data from other WGS datasets (publically available and generated in house) they will conduct in depth functional characterisation of selected variants and target genes.

The successful applicant will enjoy working as part of a multidisciplinary team interacting with internal and external bioinformatics and biology collaborators. The appointee will excel in coordinating and exploring the medical research areas through exploiting these collaborations and, be a fast learner and will be highly motivated.

Candidates should possess a PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or a related disciple; have a strong track record of generating high quality research and appropriate publication record.

This is a fixed-term appointment for 3 years in the first instance. Appointments will be made in the range – £32,844* – £41,718 inclusive. Starting salary will be based on previous postdoctoral experience. Future progression is based on annual performance review.

*£32,844 p.a. inclusive is a starting salary for applicants who have submitted thesis and are awaiting PhD award

To apply please submit an application online on the ICR Careers site, attaching your CV with the supporting statement (addressing with specific examples where you meet the person specification, a brief description of your relevant experience and incl. the names and addresses of at least two referees).

For more details, please refer to the job description and person specification.

We consider all applications on merit and have a strong commitment to enhancing the diversity of our staff.
