POSTDOC IN THE BETA CELL BIOLOGY GROUP AT THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES
Copenhagen University
Job Description
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen
We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher for a 2 year position starting 1 February 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The postdoc will be part of the research group working on understanding beta cell dysfunction in diabetes and the underlying mechanisms.
Information on the department can be found at: https: // bmi.ku.dk
Our research Our research is focussed on understanding the mechanism behind beta cell dysfunction in diabetes. We use in vitro and in vivo models of beta cell stress with emphasis on metabolic and inflammatory stress factors including hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and proinflammatory cytokines. We perform functional analysis of the beta cells such as glucose stimulated insulin secretion, cell apoptosis and proliferation. Studies of the mechanisms involved in the dysfunction include various cell signalling pathways, mRNA expression (PCR and RNA-seq), epigenetics (ChIP-PCR and ChIP-seq). Recently, we have focussed on the identification and characterization of factors that are able to prevent or reverse the stress-induced dysfunction of beta cells. Most project are conducted by teams including technicians, students and staff and are often collaborations with other researchers at UCPH and research groups abroad.
Your job You will be engaged in a project with the aim of characterizing the protective effect of short chain fatty acids on stress-induced beta cell dysfunction in animal models of type 2 diabetes as well as in in vitro cellular models of beta cell dedifferentiation. The job includes establishing animal models of type 2 diabetes and the characterization of glucose metabolism and beta cells function in vivo and in the histological samples. In vitro, cell lines as well as primary animal and human islets of Langerhans will be used to characterize the effects of short chain fatty acids on beta cell dysfunction in response to metabolic and inflammatory stress. Assays include; cell proliferation, insulin secretion, mRNA expression, histone modifications and transcriptional activity.
You will be working as part of a larger group, all working on the common goal of understanding beta cell biology in the context of diabetes. Professional and personal development for the postdoctoral fellow has high priority and be accomplished through active participation in international collaborations, conferences, publications and supervision of students in the lab.
Profile We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:
Essential experience and skills:
You have a PhD in biological science
You are highly experienced in cell culture and animal models of diabetes
You have an active interest in understanding the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes
Proficient communication skills and ability to work in teams
You have an interest in mentoring and teaching students
Excellent English skills written and spoken
Desirable experience and skills:
Experience in project management
FELASA-B
Theoretical and experimental knowledge in diabetes research
Publications in experimental diabetes research
Place of employment
The place of employment is at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Panum Institute, University of Copenhagen. We offer creative and stimulating working conditions in dynamic and international research environment. Our research facilities include modern laboratories and interdisciplinary research teams focused on conducting basic biomedical research with translational potential.
Terms of employment The employment as postdoc is a full time and fixed-term position for 2 years. Starting date is 1 February 1 2021 or after agreement.
Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
