Job Description
Research Fellow in the Interdisciplinary Study of Endofullerenes Magnetic Resonance
Location: Highfield Campus Salary: £32,817 to £34,804 per annum Full Time Fixed Term for 24 months Closing Date: Saturday 21 November 2020 Interview Date: To be confirmed Reference: 1307820EB
You will join the research group of Prof Malcolm H Levitt. The project involves the interdisciplinary study of endofullerenes, which are substances in which molecules or atoms are trapped inside carbon cages. The project involves nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, infrared and terahertz spectroscopy, and inelastic neutron scattering. You will be responsible for gathering spectroscopic data in our laboratory and the laboratories of our collaborators, and for interpreting the data in terms of a consistent model for the dynamics of the encapsulated atoms or molecules.
It is essential you have a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in either Physics or Chemistry or a related field as well as practical experience of NMR spectroscopy: NMR: inelastic neutron scattering: terahertz and infrared spectroscopies. Practical experience of cryogenic NMR spectroscopy is desirable as is experience of programming in Mathematica; knowledge of the structures and properties of fullerene; spectroscopy of endofullerenes.
There will be development opportunities to spend a small fraction of the time helping supervise student research.
You will be part of the Magnetic Resonance Section at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Southampton. The Section has a well-equipped NMR facility including one 700MHz, three 600MHz, one 500MHz, two 400 MHz and a 300 MHz spectrometers. A variety of probes allow liquid-state and solid-state experiments as well as micro-imaging and cryogenic experiments. The section offers wide expertise that spans from theory of spin dynamics to NMR methodology in solid and liquid state, microfluidics NMR, biomolecular NMR in liquid and solid state and NMR at cryogenic temperatures. An in-house mechanical workshop service is available.
