Job Description

Research Fellow in Biogeochemistry of Marine Steel CorrosionSchool of Environment and Technology

Location:Brighton - Moulsecoomb

Salary:£35,845 to £42,792 per annum

Contract Length:18 months

Closing Date:Sunday 16 August 2020

This is a fascinating subject matter, for which we are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow in biogeochemistry, geomicrobiology, or corrosion science to work on the Interreg 2 Seas project SOCORRO: Seeking out corrosion (before it’s too late), funded by the EU-RDF (European Union Research Development Fund).

This post will give you the opportunity to be responsible for initial quality assurance and interpretation of environmental monitoring data, geochemical analysis of water, sediment and corrosion products, and assisting with genomic analysis by DGGE and HRM. Working on a multidisciplinary team investigating environmental risk factors for marine steel corrosion, including microbially influenced corrosion, there will also be the opportunity to work with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of corrosion products. In addition, you will be able to work on the preparation of papers from research results, and on communication and collaboration with EU academic and industrial partners.

To be successful in this post you should have:

  A good (1 or 2:1) degree, in geology, environmental chemistry/microbiology or materials science.

  A PhD in geochemistry, environmental microbiology, environmental chemistry or corrosion science or have experience in at least one of microbial genomics, mineralogy (by FTIR and XRD), water quality monitoring, steel corrosion or environmental geochemistry.

  Sufficient, up to date breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques.

  Effective communication in written and verbal media, including technical writing, conference presentation and science communication.

We will consider applications from candidates seeking to job sharing, and part-time working is a possibility. It is intended that you will be able to take up your post from 1st October 2020.
