　　Applicants are invited to apply for a full time clinical research fellow in neurology commencing 5 August 2020. This post is fixed term for 12 months. This fellowship is a great training opportunity for those looking to augment their neurology experience, or wishing to develop a clinical and/or research interest in the clinical neurosciences (neurology).

　　ABOUT THE TEAM

　　The post-holder will join the Southampton Clinical and Experimental Neurology Team, a distinguished neuroscience research team working across the Trust and University. The research programme studies the interaction between blood and the brain in health and neurological disease, with clinical relevance in two main disease areas: inflammatory and haemorrhagic brain conditions. The team includes five senior researchers and an average of ten clinical and/or scientific researchers at various levels of seniority at any one time. Translational research is carried out in collaboration with neuropathologists, medical physicists, chemists, biologists, psychiatrists and psychologists across the University and Trust. Research is funded by Research Councils, NIHR, charities and pharma, with a current portfolio of >£1 million. The group publishes multiple four-star manuscripts annually in journals with impact factors > 5. Research benefits from a wet laboratory with biochemical, molecular and histochemical capability, image-processing workstations, and access to high-performance supercomputing, a research-dedicated MRI scanner, and other facilities.

　　On an institutional level, the fellow will join the CRN Wessex Research Fellow programme in Southampton, within the Southampton Academy of Research (SoAR). The programme offers medical trainees an opportunity to participate in clinical research with the objective of equipping them with the necessary skills to deliver high-quality portfolio research activity throughout their future career. The post-holder is expected to participate in the CRN Wessex Research Fellow Education Programme, which includes quarterly Wessex-wide research fellow meetings, participation in the competency based approach to training and development opportunities (see below for further detail). Progress reports will help development, and include details of research recruitment, grant applications, publications and achievement of research fellow competencies.

　　WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

　　The ideal candidate would have successfully completed a Foundation Programme or equivalent, and can apply for this post either prior to or during core medical or speciality training. You would be able to manage acute medical emergencies. You will have an ability to prioritise tasks, work across different specialties and teams, recognize your own abilities and limitations, and communicate effectively with team members, patients and their carers. Prior experience of research and/or Neurology would be an asset, but this post is also ideal for those seeking their first clinical research and/ or neurology experience.

　　ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

　　Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

　　Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

　　Basic Salary – MT03 £37,935

　　Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

　　WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

　　Both research and clinical components will be supervised. The research is supervised by Dr Ian Galea and clinical supervision will be provided by Dr George Pengas, two Consultant Neurologists who have co-supervised this post in the CRN Wessex Research Fellow programme for several years, so we have a well- oiled system which is adaptive to the post-holder’s needs. For the research part, Dr Ian Galea has personally supervised 9 fellows across CRN Wessex Research Fellow and integrated clinical academic training programmes, producing research output and/or proceeding to research careers. Supervision will be close and responsive, with weekly updates and monthly team-wide meetings. For the clinical part of the post, the fellow will have nominated Educational and Clinical Supervisors.
