Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322. With potential progression once in post to £42,792 a year

Job Purpose
To create and disseminate knowledge through conducting research detailed on an awarded research grant with a focus on experimental pain and low back pain.
Background
The Centre of Precision Rehabilitation for Spinal Pain within the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow.
This Centre, which brings together current multidisciplinary expertise at the University of Birmingham, is a Centre dedicated to spinal pain research and is recruiting additional top researchers in the field of Experimental Low Back Pain.
The appointed candidate will be expected to have ambition to participate in one of the UK’s strongest research Schools, maintaining our strengths as a leading research-led teaching department, capturing external research funding, and publishing work of the highest academic quality and impact.
The appointee will have a PhD in Physiotherapy, Kinesiology or similar and a background consistent with a research focus on Low Back Pain. The candidate is expected to have a track record of publications within these fields, and experience with some of the following techniques: low back pain, experimental pain models, electrical stimulation, high-density electromyography, quantitative sensory testing, kinematics, knowledge translation (patient and people involvement). Experience with programming in Matlab/Simulink is highly desirable. The appointee will be developing and testing novel experimental pain and physical assessment techniques.
Summary of Role
•Conduct and manage research activities in the field of experimental low back pain
•Publish the conducted research results in International peer-reviewed journals
•Supervise Masters and PhD students
•Contribute to teaching activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Main Duties/Responsibilities
•To plan and carry out research in the field of Experimental Low Back Pain
•To execute teaching activities in the field of Pain and Motor Control
The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below;
•Contribute to writing bids for research funding
•Analyse and interpret data
•Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
•Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc.
•Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance on PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
•Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
•Undertake management/administration arising from research
•Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research related administration
•Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
•Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews*
•Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters*
•Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research*
•Deal with the problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines*
*These indicative responsibilities may also be included in a research role at grade 6.
Person Specification
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in Physiotherapy, Kinesiology or related areas. The candidate should have experience in:
•Publications in well ranked journals in the field of Pain/Neuroscience/Rehabilitation
•Supervision and/or co-supervision of Bachelor, Master and/or PhD students.
•Teaching activities in the field of Pain, Motor Control and/or Rehabilitation
•Some of the following techniques: low back pain, experimental pain models, electrical stimulation, high-density electromyography, quantitative sensory testing, kinematics, knowledge translation (patient and people involvement).
•Programming in Matlab/Simulink (highly desirable).
