  贝勒大学环境科学与生物方向博士后招聘

The Departments of Environmental Science and Biology at Baylor University, Texas seek a postdoctoral scholar to conduct research that applies informatics and high-volume data analytics to understand complex human-environment linkages, with emphasis on urbanized streams, regulated rivers, reservoirs, and their tributaries. The fellow will be co-mentored by Dr. Ryan McManamay (Environmental Science, https://mcmanamaylab.weebly.com/) and Dr. Stephen Powers (Biology, https://sites.baylor.edu/powersresearchgroup/), and will be encouraged to collaborate with our growing research community.

  Background

Baylor has outstanding research facilities situated about a 90-minute drive from the booming Austin and Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas metro areas. The expected research will develop new strengths and capabilities in characterizing dynamics in aquatic and urban environments through integration of remotely sensed imagery and data products, in situ monitoring, urban indicators, and modeling to understand and forecast complex human-environment systems. Although the focus is largely aquatic, we welcome individuals with backgrounds in terrestrial systems, especially those that possess the desired qualifications and have interest in applying their skills to new lines of inquiry. Potential focus areas include, but are not restricted to, water use mapping, resource footprints, environmental DNA mapping, and water quality dynamics in drinking water reservoirs. The scholar will assist in developing novel monitoring systems to collect and analyze high spatial and temporal resolution data streams in urban or human-modified environments. We also anticipate the scholar will participate in research on examining options, constraints, and trajectories of future urbanization, resource use, and conservation at regional to global scales. Other projects may include developing and testing autonomous imaging technologies for rapid biomonitoring and ecological forecasting of water quality conditions.

The position is fully funded for three years from June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2023.

  Role of Postdoctoral Fellow

The scholar is expected to routinely publish scientific articles in international journals, lead or contribute to proposals, co-mentor graduate students, serve professional societies, and, if desired, serve as an instructor and participate in curriculum development.

  Qualifications

Expected qualifications for a candidate include:

Advanced computational skills with ability to quickly manipulate large datasets and perform exploratory analytics

Evidence of scholarly activity with experience publishing in reputable scientific journals

Experience in informatics and rapid data retrieval, such as web scraping and database queries

Familiarity with programming languages, specifically R and python

Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS or QGIS platforms

  Preferred qualifications include:

Established evidence of machine learning/deep learning skills to explore large or high-volume time series datasets

Ability to utilize advanced computation facilities through Linux platforms

One degree in computational sciences (e.g. bachelors or masters)

Experience using cloud-based applications and web services

  Experience with JavaScript
