Postdoctoral Appointee - Polymer Materials Science
Sandia National Laboratories
Location: Albuquerque, NM
Job Number: 7065269 (Ref #: 671481)
Posting Date: Mar 12, 2020
Job Description
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee interested in performing fundamental research and development in the field of polymer materials science. You will join a team of 6-8 researchers and expected to lead at least two experimental programs. These programs involve study of the fundamental chemistry and physics of crosslinked polymer thermosets and seek to apply the knowledge gained to develop new and improved, conventionally- and additively-manufactured polymer thermosets. We use modern approaches in polymer chemistry, such as metathesis polymerization and dynamic covalent chemistry, to develop polymer thermosets that are easier to process and possess better final properties. We rely on a wide range of characterization techniques familiar to polymer scientists, particularly nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical analysis. You will be expected to contribute and execute innovative research ideas, present your research at various internal and external forums, and publish your research in peer-reviewed journals. You will also be provided the opportunity to seek funding for additional research topics with the guidance and support of your staff mentors. This postdoctoral position is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is seeking to transition from their PhD research in polymer science to a fast-paced research and development environment in a National Laboratory setting that provides ample chances for both personal and professional enrichment.
Required:
+ You have, or are pursuing, a PhD in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field and possess a bachelor's in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) + Experience in experimental research involving polymer synthesis and/or characterization + Strong publication record + Able to acquire and retain a DOE Q-level security clearance
Desired:
+ Evidence of dedication to laboratory safety + Strong work ethic and motivation to lead multiple research programs + Experience in the study of crosslinked polymers + Experience in synthesis of polymers with controlled polymerization methods, such as anionic polymerization + Experience in monomer synthesis and/or synthetic organic chemistry + Broad experience in polymer characterization, including typical polymer techniques in chromatography, spectroscopy, microscopy, rheology, and Thermomechanical testing + Experience in additive manufacturing + Desire to mentor undergraduate and graduate students
Department Description:
The Organic Materials Science Department researches and develops new and advanced materials and processing strategies to meet a wide range of specialized applications in nuclear weapons, national security and industrial applications. Our department is dedicated to scientific discovery, creativity, innovation and practical solutions for our diverse customers. The department specializes in aging science and predictive performance of polymers, synthetic organic and polymer chemistry, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and physical characterization of organic materials, and advanced manufacturing of polymers. We perform reliability studies for polymers with an emphasis on understanding degradation mechanisms, structure-property relationships, and performance margins. Current areas of R&D in the department include: developing novel encapsulant materials, crafting new thermoset chemistries for additive manufacturing, developing innovative NMR techniques to understand transport phenomena in polymers, measuring and optimizing electrical performance of polymer dielectrics, elucidating the interdependency of chemical change and polymer physics over long timeframes, creating reversible and degradable chemistries, understanding polymer interfacial properties and adhesion, measuring and predicting radiation effects on polymers, monitoring of reactive thermoset cure kinetics, and quantifying permeation behavior and spatially dependent degradation processes. We perform a complete spectrum of chemical, structural, thermal, rheological, and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials that must perform over 30 – 40 year lifetimes.
