  美国能源部埃姆斯实验室物理、材料科学、固态化学博士后招聘

  Job Description

The Division of Materials Science and Engineering with Iowa State University at the Ames Laboratory, a Department of Energy National Laboratory affiliated with Iowa State University, is searching for a qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate available within Office of Science, Basic Energy Sciences (BES) project involving design of rare earth intermetallic materials with multiple functionalities that arise due to first-order magnetostructural and/or magnetovolume transformations. The BES project focuses on unravelling the intricate relationships between local and itinerant magnetism, bonding, and structure to predict and control stability and polymorphism, sensitivity to a range of external stimuli, and therefore, physical behaviors of 4f-based intermetallic materials.

The candidate will be a member of Professor Vitalij K. Pecharsky’s research group and will perform research work in close collaboration with experimental scientists. Research will involve work with in-house and standard electronic-structure techniques, such as plane-wave, full-potential, and Green’s function methods. A principle component of the research involves proper treatment of 4f-electron systems, where spin-orbit coupling is naturally strong, for the accurate rationalization and prediction of physical behaviors of lanthanide-containing intermetallic and related compounds. The candidate’s work will also involve prediction of heretofore unknown, stable rare earth intermetallics assembled from geometrically compatible fragments of known structures, as well as prediction of their ground state and finite temperature crystallographic, magnetic and electronic transport properties.

The candidate is expected to collaborate in a team consisting of other scientists and graduate students, and conduct both collaborative and independent research. Therefore, the successful candidate must be able to effectively communicate with a variety of audiences. The successful candidate will have the ability to plan, initiate, and execute research in collaboration with multiple PIs. Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills with positive attitude are also helpful to provide professional work environment.

Required Qualifications: 1) Ph.D. must be completed prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications: 1) Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Solid State Chemistry or related field 2) Demonstrated knowledge and experience with electronic-structure methods and their applications to complex materials. 3) Demonstrated knowledge and experience with electronic structure methods and their applications to properly treat intermetallic compounds containing lanthanides at 0 K, as well as finite temperatures. 4) Demonstrated knowledge of crystallography, magnetism, and electronic transport 5) Demonstrated knowledge and experience with multiple-scattering (Green’s function) theory, algorithm developing, coding, and application of such methods in density-functional theory. 6) Demonstrated knowledge or experience in using artificial intelligence/machine learning and modern data use paradigms.

Interested candidates should submit 1) a cover letter detailing specific experience; 2) current C.V.; and 3) contact information for three (3) references. To guarantee consideration, applications must be submitted by October 30, 2019.
