The Protein Quality Control Group at the Goethe University Frankfurt invites applications for a Postdoctoral position (f/m/d, E 13, TV-G-U) to study

The mammalian mitochondrial unfolded protein response and its role in cellular homeostasis

Mitochondria play a major role in the function of cells and perturbations in mitochondrial protein folding has been shown in various human diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Upon mitochondrial protein misfolding, cells activate the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt) to regain a balanced proteostasis (for more insight, please refer to Munch and Harper, Nature 2016). The molecular identity of the UPRmt in mammalian cells remains unclear, particularly in regard to its effects on cellular homeostasis in disease. Our laboratory has a strong focus on quantitative proteomics, genetic, gene editing, biochemical, and cell biological methods to elucidate the mammalian UPRmt and its role in human disease, particularly in cancer models.

We are seeking outstanding, enthusiastic, and ambitious candidates (PhD or MD required) with an extensive background in either biochemistry/cell biology, omics approaches, or large data sets computational biology with a keen interest in the role of protein quality control in human disease and deciphering the underlying molecular mechanisms.

We offer an ambitious environment and project with access to state-of-the-art technology platforms to carry out cutting edge research. The laboratory is mainly funded by an ERC grant and the Emmy Noether Program (DFG) and part of the multidisciplinary environment of the Institute of Biochemistry II at the Goethe University Medical School Frankfurt with its internationally highly competitive young, dynamic, and scientifically stimulating environment. The host institute is international with English as the common language. Applications from abroad are especially welcome. As an equal opportunity employer, applications of women are specifically invited. Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification and aptitude will be given preferential consideration. The limitation of the contract is based upon the regulations of the “Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz” in conjunction with the “Hessischen Hochschulgesetz”.

Formal applications including a cover/motivation letter, CV, and reference letters of two referees should be addressed to: Dr. Christian Munch (ch.muench@em.uni-frankfurt.de) referencing “Postdoctoral position”. Deadline for applications is August 20th 2019.
